[Micro Motivation #21 – The Best Things In Life Are Unplanned! This week I dis…]
Speaker: Adam DeGraide
Hey, everyone, it’s Adam DeGraide here with a Micro Motivation. If you didn’t see last week’s, you might want to check it out, it was very interesting to see the comments that that last Micro Motivation actually generated. I talked about Harriet Tubman and how she was freeing slaves and I related that to my Christian faith and it really got people fired up, which was interesting. Some different thoughts, different opinions, I highly recommend you check it out.
This week, I want to talk about how the best things in life are unplanned. Just like the fact of me sitting in the car and doing my next Micro Motivation. I realized I hadn’t done one in the car. I don’t think I’ve ever done a video in a car before, so I figured, what the heck, why not? It’s a good time to talk about things that are unplanned. Some of the best things in my life have been unplanned. I read a book many, many years ago called Surprised by Joy, which was a book by C.S. Lewis. In the book, C.S. Lewis talked about how joy has to be one of the reasons why he came to Christ and came to faith.
Because what he realized was the fact that happiness was way different than joy. You could be happy with something, but joy is unexpected. For example, he likened being in an airport and then all of a sudden, a long-lost friend out of nowhere that you haven’t seen in years shows up and the next thing you know, you’re like, there’s joy there. It’s more than happiness. It’s more than those things. Joy can only come from outside of yourself. It’s a gift.
And he actually recognized it when he got out of bed one morning and he opened the curtains and the sun just hit him at the right way and he realized, my goodness gracious, an overwhelming sense of joy and peace came to him. And that’s what it means that the best things in life are unplanned because in so many ways, they’re gifts from God.
Many of you may or may not know, I actually have two sets of children. I had my son Zachary, who is almost 25, my daughter Brooke, who is almost 23. She made me a grandfather about six months ago. And then I have two beautiful children that I never would have planned on having, but I met Crystal. We got married seven years ago and now I have Anthem and Rhapsody. Things that I’d never planned but my gosh, I can’t imagine my life without my kids.
Because you see, the best things in life are unplanned. They’re things that just happen to you and all of a sudden, be mindful of it. Like look around and say to yourself, “Where is Good communicating to me today?” You’ll be amazed, whenever you have a sense of joy, it’s much different than happy. Very, very different than being happy. Joy comes from outside. Happiness is something that we all can have, but joy is a gift that’s given to you.
As you think about your own life today and you think about all the things that have been unplanned in your life, whether it’s an unplanned vacation, an unplanned meeting, an unplanned conversation, an unplanned baby or child, these can all be amazing blessings in your life because the best things in life are unplanned. Don’t forget that.
This has been a Micro Motivation with Adam DeGraide. Remember, if you can’t make your point in under four minutes, you might not have one to make. Thank you so much for tuning in, guys, and remember, you, too, could be surprised by joy and the unplanned things are where the magic is. Thanks, everyone.
